in’s and out’s for 2024 / 01.09.2024
Buenos días!
Did ya’ miss me? It’s been a few weeks! It’s a new year but I’m still the same yapper. Every year I am always so grateful for all my friends in my life. This past year I am also very grateful for all of you who signed up to receive my silly weekly music newsletter. This really is a silly little passion project of mine. I don’t know if y’all read them or listen to the playlist, but whateva’ I know some do (at least two of y’all lmao). Anyway, I really enjoy sharing parts of myself with y’all and also sharing music I am into. So thank you all <3
And now, back to our regularly scheduled program…. I didn't know what the first playlist of the new year should be, but I figured since it’s a new year I should just base it off of my in’s and out’s for 2024 (not all of them, just some). If you haven’t made any I hope this inspires you a little. Enjoy!
I Wanna Be Adored by The Raveonettes — 2024 is the year I stop chasing potential lovers. I wanna be chased again so if any of you wanna go on a date you gotta ask me out. But also one of my 2024 in’s is to go on one date, just one.
Ben by Michael Jackson —This song is for the ‘in’ of making new friends and tending/nurturing to the ones I got bc I love the homies <3
9 by AAESPO — 2024 in, morning stretches. I’d like to think this is what that would sound like.
Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival — I say ‘no’ to things a lot (sometimes) and I also overthink (sometimes). So this is to those out’s that bring some uneasiness, which are then gone after I follow through or don’t overthink.
August by No Vacation — 2024 in: going back to the potter's wheel and you bet this song is gonna be on my potters wheel playlist when I’m throwing some clay.
Loner by DEHD — 2024 out: less of a homebody. It’s just so hard when I’ve created a cozy little space for me to listen to my silly little music in peace. Also, genuinely surprised that not every weekly playlist I send out doesn’t have a DEHD song because I love these foo’s.
Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridges — 2024 in: digestive health
Tangerine by Tommy Newport — No in’s or out’s just really wanted y’all to hear this song because it makes me happy.
NOS SOLTAMOS chiliado by Divino Niño, Inner Wave, and Pablo Sotelo — Another bop y’all need to listen to :)
Time to Pretend by MGMT — I am livin’ & lovin’ life. Truly ain’t nothing else I could ask for right now. Moisturized. Happy. In My Lane. Focused. Flourishing.

hit shuffle on this one / 12.05.2023
Buenos días!
I always create a variety of playlists from the last newsletter to the next that I then can’t decide which one to share. Needless to say there have been many playlists I have not shared with y’all. Eventually they’ll make it into the mix (maybe). Anyway, enjoy listening to 1 of the 3 I made for this week.
Forever - Single Version by The Little Dippers
I Feel Love - 12” Version by Donna Summer —This is my favorite Donna Summer song. Could quite literally listen to this song on repeat.
Mexican Dream by Piero Piccioni
Walk on By by Dionne Warwick
Dream A Little Dream Of Me by The Mamas & The Papas
You and Me by Penny & The Quarters
Playground Love by Air, Gordon Tracks
She Can’t Love You by Chemise
Autopsie d’un complot by Ahmed Malek — Another fav of mine and the album itself is worth a listen.
I Got You Babe by Sonny & Cher
Young Hearts Run Free by Candi Staton
Love Come Down by Evelyn "Champagne" King
Casbah by Ahmed Malek
Can You Get To That by Funkadelic
In Your Eyes by BADBADNOTGOOD (feat. Charlotte Day Wilson)
Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone by The Temptations
Prove It On Me Blues by Ma Rainey — Shoutout to Black queer lesbian women in the 1920’s, “Went out last night with a crowd of my friends. They must’ve been women, ’cause I don’t like no men.”

627 sq ft. / 11.28.2023
Buenos días!
Y’know how you tend to create feelings for inanimate objects? Like when you see a little trinket at a store and you pick it up to buy it. But then see that you left the other trinket there by themselves? And so you end up buying the other trinket too?? No? Yeah me neither…
This playlist is dedicated to my first ever solo apartment and really to the first time ever living alone. I have always shared a space either with family, friends, or roommates. So this was the first time I really got to create a whole space — not just a room — that I was happy to be in. I was able to decorate it the way I wanted and have as many trinkets as I wanted. Not that my parents never let me, but it was different.
In this space I got the chance to grow, to learn, and figure out who I am and what I want in my life (for the most part). I had this silver lining of the early pandemic where I got to transition in private. To then have my own space to literally physically and emotionally transition. And all of those things have brought so much healing to myself and little kid me.
When I first moved into my apartment I was severely depressed, like I called my mom bawling on the phone telling her I hated grad school and wanted to come home. My mental state was bad babes. But then I got my apartment, I was closer to my homies, and this silly little life proved to be worth living.
So, here’s to my first solo apartment that brought just as much joy into my life as it brought me rays of sunshine in the early mornings as I drank my coffee and looked out the window.
627 sq ft.
Little Life by Cordelia— I think I do like this little life… When I was a teenager I said to myself, “when I live alone I will buy a blue velvet sofa” and I did.
Tous les garçons et les filles - Slow by Françoise Hardy — Every Sunday morning while I made myself breakfast — usually french toast with bananas and strawberries as toppings. I would play this Françoise Hardy album first on spotify then eventually I bought it on vinyl. It was my Sunday ritual that I loved and will miss.
Heaven by Mitski — One of Mitski’s most romantic songs. But it just reminds me of every morning I had where I would french press my coffee and sit by the window, soaking the warm sun while drinking my coffee, and mentally preparing for the day.
Aaron by Palehound— I listen to the playlist as I write these little notes and omg I am tearing up LMAO This song is about being trans, “Your mother wanted to name you Aaron, but her body built you as a different man.” In 627 sq ft. I really got to grow and know myself in a very healing and peaceful way I never thought I would have. More importantly, I always had so much love and support from the homies that alone is more than I could have ever asked for.
Les Fleurs by Minnie Riperton — I fucking love this song. Here’s to all the seemingly small, seemingly insignificant objects and moments in life that brought me joy. I hope y’all start noticing those things too.
Fast Slow Disco by St. Vincent— This is one of my favorite songs by St. Vincent. I think it just really captures the slow and stagnant movement in life that we often take for granted. I always think, did I enjoy my time alone as much as possible? My friends would argue yes, because I am very much a homebody.
Tongue Tied by GROUPLOVE — Again, my apartment brought me so much happiness this is one of the songs that encapsulates that feeling.
Dreams by The Cranberries — I looooooooove this song. Top favorite songs for me. My apartment made me desirously happy so here is another song that holds true to that feeling.
Dancing On My Own by Robyn — I know I was alone, but I never felt lonely. That’s a big thing for me because growing up I felt very much alone so to not have felt that way while living alone is something I am really proud of. Especially because I didn’t look towards a romantic partnership to fulfill that. Yes, I did have my friends. But more importantly I had myself. I am just at peace with who I was, who I am, and who I’m becoming.
Dog Days Are Over of Love by Florence + The Machine — In the 627 sq ft. I found happiness and realized there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Godspeed by Frank Ocean — I'm gonna miss those big windows, soaking in all that sunlight every day. The way the morning sunbeams hit the floor and watching the leaves of the trees in front of the windows change color in the evening sunset – forever in the fabric of my memories. It's the little things I'll really miss.
Algo Está Cambiando by Julieta Venegas — My Saturn return is nearly at an end, so here’s to the changes that await me.

the lost art of sampling /11.21.2023
¡Buenos días/tardes!
They really don’t sample songs like they used to. Like I had such high hopes for Jack Harlow when he sampled Fergie's “Glamorous.” And y’know what may that was my first mistake, but anyway Harlow’s song ended up being not great. I’ve had classroom discussions with my students about this. Anyway, that’s the theme for this week — all of my most personal favorite songs that sample other songs I love.
So like last week, this playlist is best played in order like actually because the OG songs that were sampled will play right after the sampler?
the lost art of sampling
Can I Kick It? by A Tribe Called Quest— This is one of my favorites and what inspired me to make this playlist. They sampled other songs besides Lou Reed’s, but it starts off with Reed’s sample which gives it such an iconic intro.
Walk On the Wild Side by Lou Reed — Walk On the Wild Side is about trans sex workers. Early into the song Reed mentions Candy (Candy Darling), who was a very famous trans woman that was very popular during the ‘Warhol years’ in NYC. Largely, due because Warhol took her in and made her a star or whatever. Personally, I hate Warhol, but hit me up if you wanna talk more about the Warhol years and all the iconic folks that were part of it.
The Move by Beastie Boys — They’re big fans of Los Angeles Negros, there’s actually an interview I saw where they had explained the whole process of including the song. Although the sample comes towards the end at like 2:55 it is done so beautifully.
El Rey y Yo by Los Angeles Negros— Y’know maybe I am biased cause I grew up on these songs lol but its a silly little song and I love it.
Paper Planes by M.I.A. — This song is iconic and I remember everyone was listening to it on repeat when it came out. There’s even a remix that Lil’ Wayne did. Anyway, I am a long time fan of The Clash, so when I heard this song of course I was immediately into it. I don’t follow M.I.A. so much anymore because she voiced anti-vax and anti-5G stuff.
Straight to Hell by The Clash — I love The Clash. This is one of their more popular songs from their Combat Rock album. My favorite songs from them are: Spanish Bombs and Lost in the Supermarket.
Mo Money Mo Problems by The Notorious B.I.G. (Ft. Puff Daddy & Mase) / I’m Coming Out by Diana Ross — it works soooooo amazingly well.
Fantasy by Mariah Carey — I can listen to this song on repeat for days. Like homegirl knew what she was doing when she sampled Genius of Love.
Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club — Released in 1981 with only 3 days of available studio time, the synth-pop and post-disco vibes. Like c’mon it makes this song iconic years later.
Hold Up by Beyonce / Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs — What’s the connection with Hold Up and Maps? Through some tweets Ezra Koenig made referencing Maps back in 2011 which then in 2016 we got Hold Up as a song in Beyonce’s Lemonade album — this is one of my favorite facts to know.
Ms. Fat Booty by Mos Def / One Step Ahead by Aretha Franklin — The way Aretha’s song is layered through the whole song, “Great gowns, beautiful gowns” IYKYK.

something (mostly) new for the homies / 11.14.2023
Buenos días!
Most of these songs are new to me, so I haven’t made any memories with them to share with y’all. So it’s mostly an overview of the songs and what I think is cool about them. I think all are worth a listen and this playlist is best played in order, but who am I to tell you what to do with your life?
something (mostly) new for the homies
Not Strong Enough by boygenius— isn’t it rumored that they’re taking a hiatus?
Sophie by UCHE YARA — Y’know when you listen to a song and you think you know the lyrics, but you’re completely off? Ya, that happened to me with this song. I thought it started with, “Sophie, you’re so mean / Your lesbianism is uncanny” LMAO It’s actually, “Sophie, you're so mean / left me in this uncanny.” ANYWAY, it’s such a good song. I think this one is my favorite newest song this week. I like the build up of this leading up to verse 2 and the electric guitar through the song, sooooo good.
Purple Daisies by Luna Ivy — Bay Area local heroes <3 Not really heroes, but they are from the Bay Area, specifically San Francisco. I think the intro to this song very much gives off San Francisco vibes. Also, it reminds me of Best Coast a bit. “Yo quiero unos besos, tu eres mi sueño,” I'ma sucker when bands have spanglish songs.
Jonny by Faye Webster — for all the heartbroken homies out there.
Kiss Me Until My Lips Fall Off by Lebanon Hanover — for all the goth homies out there.
Supercut by Lorde — If you follow me on spotify (@deadvibes) and look at the friends activity, then you know that I was listening to this song on repeat on Sunday. This is a sad banger and it reminds of that meme/interview, “the club is bumping, the ladies look good, the alcohol is flowing. There is much pain in the world but not in this room right now.”
Material by Cafe Racer — Gives me a bit of the doors/lou reed vibes. Small band from Chicago, Illinois. This song is from their newest album Words In Error.
Walking On Heaven by Lovers Peak — More Bay Area local heroes and another one for the goth homies out there. I recently found these foos, it’s two brothers who formed this lil’ duo. They are inspired by early-80s new wave, indie rock, and post punk, which you can definitely hear in this song. If you’re up in the bay then they’re always doing concerts in SF/Santa Cruz.
Water by Vaticanjail — This is a Latina artist, only has 169 listeners monthly. She reminds me of CocoRosie, if y’all know who that is. Specifically the song Werewolf by CocoRosie. Both these songs are really good.
If I Go by of all living things — The simplest lyrics ever sung, “If I go it is not to come back / If I go it is not because of you.”
Tezeta (Nostalgia) by Mulatu Astatke— Anyone up for some Ethiopian jazz? As the song progresses it only gets better.

los tiempos están cambiando / 11.07.2023
Buenos días/tardes!
I keep forgetting to write this up. I don’t think my circadian rhythm has synced up yet with the time change, which is rather annoying because it’s throwing me off completely in my schedule. So I’ve been feeling so restless.
Anyway, como el Bob Dylan dice los tiempos están cambiando. Side note, I was also obsessed con el Bob Dylan's music for a hot minute. This week's playlists consists of songs I’ve been into, most are slower vibes, which I do think encapsulates my overall mood lately.
los tiempos están cambiando
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized— man, I am happy I didn’t know this song when I was depressed or going through a heartbreak.
Zebra by Beach House — jesus, another sad song lmao
Shut Up Kiss Me by Angel Olsen — this song is such a perfect song to listen to if you have a crush, which for me is always.
I'll Try Anything Once ("You Only Live Once" demo) (Heart In a Cage B-side) by The Strokes — Imma '“i’ll try anything once” typa bitch
Sleeper by BADBADNOTGOOD and Charlotte Day Wilson — I’ve been getting into BADBADNOTGOOD more recently, so good.
Dancer by Idles and LCD Soundsystem — Someone I once really liked loved LCD Soundsystem and I tried so hard to get into their music, but at the time I couldn’t so maybe I’ll try again and see what my thoughts are. I do like IDLES though.
Tugboat by Galaxie 500 — “It's a place I'd like to be / It's a place I'd be happy” — y’know what I think I got seasonal depression.
I Don’t Know You by Mannequin Pussy — Another song for when you have a crush. I feel like this is such a big shift from their usual music, at least the ones I first listened to (Romantic and Patience). It's more soft and shoegaz-ey.
It Was Not A Beautiful Night by Sabrina Song — I think she’s rising up in her music career or at least the indie scene. I had included her other song Strawberry in a previous playlist. This one is less pop and more rock. Around 30 seconds is where you first get that electric guitar coming in.
Stella was a diver and she’s always done by Interpol— Every now and then I remember Interpol exists. This song also reminds me of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and then the connection Pedro Almodovar made in his film Todo Sobre mi Madre (1999). Anyway, both are good movies and this is a good song, although not my favorite from Interpol.
You Can Have It All by Yo La Tengo — I like the intro to this song, “If you want, want my love / Take it, baby”

Indigenous Peoples Day / 10.09.2023
Buenos días!
I hope everyone is doing well. It's October so that means it is my birthday month, but it also means the seasons are changing. Yesterday was so chilly and windy, which made me a little happy because I can bring out my winter clothes. I am guessing this whole week is gonna be chilly and really feel like fall weather, which I am so excited for.
Anyway, today is Indigenous Peoples Day so this week's playlist consists of indigenous artists I love to listen to. I hope y'all end up listening to them more than just this week :)
Indigenous Peoples Day
NDN Kars - Remix by The Halluci Nation (ft. Keith Secola) — I love The Halluci Nation so much. They're actually one of the 3 artists I'll listen to that is EDM/dub-step/electronic. I also saw them back in the summer of 2019 in San Francisco with some friends. It was such an amazing concert and overall memory. They invite indigenous dancers from the region/state they're playing. This is my favorite song from them, but all their other songs are worth checking out. Their most popular one is Electric Pow Wow Drum.
That's Love for You by Fawn Wood, Raven Wood, Nathan 'Rikishi' Pelly, Dallas Waskahat
AGUA DE MARACUYA by PALOMX — If you like Megan Thee Stallion or Ice Spice then you'll like PALOMX. This is one of their slower songs. They're from East Los Angeles. They incorporate mixtec and nahuatl in their songs. They also were one of the indigenous dancers that joined the Halluci Nation in the SF concert. All of their music is great and worth checking out.
Sky Woman by Anachnid
Soft Stud by Black Belt Eagle Scout — If you like Slow Pulp, Julia Jacklin, Snail Mail, Vagabon, Japanese Breakfast, Frankie Cosmos, Alvvays, illuminati hotties, or Girlpool then you'll like Black Belt Eagle Scout. Katherine Paul’s voice is so soothing and flows so seamlessly with the beat of the song. Katherine Paul said that this song stems from the complications of a queer open relationship. The guitar solo is so lustfuly beautiful.
Northern Love Affair by Digawolf — This one's a bit more folky.
Free Everybody by Elisa Harkins — If you like Hemlocke Springs, ARCA, or grimes then you'll like Elisa Harkins.
Moi, Elsie by Elisapie — If you like Nina Simone or Édith Piaf then you'll like this song.
Where Can My Man Be? by Fara Palmer — If you like Alabama Shakes, Yola, or The Highwomen then you'll like Fara Palmer.
Shamowowza by Feeble — If you like midwest emo like Joyce Manor or Modern Baseball then you'll like these foos from Oahu.
Everyday by Groakers — They got some sick guitar rifts with some really good vocals. It is one 'indigenous rocker foo' from East Los Angeles.
Come and Get Your Love by Redbone — This one's a classic from the 1970s that everyone I am sure has heard of. So if you like Stealers Wheel, The Jackson 5, or Blue Swede you'll like this band.

ghouls, goblins, and ghosts / 10.31.2023
ཐི ₍ᐢ. ̞.ᐢ₎ ཋྀ Happy Halloween! ཐི ₍ᐢ. ̞.ᐢ₎ ཋྀ
It’s been one helllllllluva week and it’s only Tuesday. I am so behind on a bunch of things and I fully blame it on getting white girl wasted on the halloween party I went to on Saturday night. Anyway, my birthday weekend was fantastic.
Since today is Halloween, this week's playlist is themed for such occasion, but I think it can also transition nicely into fall weather.
ghouls, goblins, and ghosts
Little Bit O’ Soul by The Linda Lindas — The Linda Lindas? luv them, icons.
Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But… by Arctic Monkeys — I was obsessed with Arctic Monkeys during highschool, though I have never seen them live.
Twin Peaks Twist by Messer Chups — I have been listening to this song on repeat the past 3 weeks. Maybe biased because I love Twin Peaks, but it could also be that it's a good song.
The Cult Song by Shannon & The Clams — In my Intercultural Communication course we have been talking about cults and many of my students wanna do their final projects on them, which makes me really excited. Anyway, Shannon & The Clams, they hold such a very special place in my heart and I loveeeeeee all of their music. My favorite album from them is Onion, it's so good and reminds me of a lot of fond memories. I’ve never seen them live, which makes me a little sad :(
Let’s Have A Satanic Orgy by Twin Temple — Love this satanic doo-wop. I haven’t seen them live either but they do put on a lot of shows in LA.
In The Room Where You Sleep by Dead Man’s Bones — who woulda thought Ryan Gosling could make such cool bops.
She Comes Out at Night by Saccharin — Recently found this artist who describes themselves as pinkwave goth music from Clarksville, Tennessee. Goth ppl rlly are everywhere.
19080s Horror Film by Wallows — Every now and then I obsess over an artist for awhile — I was obsessed with Wallows at some point. Anyway, slay lesbian representation.
Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) by David Bowie — You remind me of the babe (What babe?) The babe with the power. I recently rewatched Labyrinth. Ugh, I love that movie and Bowie.
In the Devil’s Territory by Sufjan Stevens — More folky, but such a bop. Also his newest album, Javelin, is really good too. He dedicated it to his late partner Evan Richardson.
El amor brujo (Love, the Magician) by Clara Rockmore & Nadia Reisenberg — I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone this but the theremin, it’s my favorite instrument. Like idk something about it. I have a private playlist of songs played on the theremin. I’m sad that not a lot of music/songs don’t include it anymore.
Be My Baby by The Ronettes — I rewatched Barbarian for the millionth time last night. It is easily one of my most favorite films. The perfect amount of horror and comedy.

all mine, all mine / 10.25.2023
Buenos días!
I originally had a completely different playlist prepping y’all for halloween (link at the end). But after a conversation with my mutual @tidesofyouth about how we’re both scorpios who feel everything so heavy around our birthdays and just get so emotional — I decided to lean into that in the form of a playlist. So here’s to some of the songs that I hold deeply close to me.
all mine, all mine
Las Mañanitas by Daniel, me estás matando — Because it is my birthday week this is the only version of this song that I wanna hear.
Neighbordhood #1 (Tunnels) by Arcade Fire — The first song I heard by Arcade Fire was Headlights Look Like Diamonds from their EP. That was the song that got me hooked on Arcade Fire. However, their album Funeral defined so much of my time in highschool and early 20s. I listened to this album in its entirety while I was in the deepest depression ever all three times, while I was the happiest I have ever been, and while driving with my windows down blasting this album/song. I think this song is the perfect intro to their album. I always attributed this song to all the complexities of growing up and becoming an adult without ever feeling like an adult. This song and album have such a special place in my heart.
Hold On by Alabama Shakes — I listen to this song every single time it’s around my birthday. I felt it so deeply when I turned 22 and that lyric came up, “Bless my heart, bless my soul Didn't think I'd make it to 22 years old.” And now, I feel that verse a bit deeper. I feel like Calum from Aftersun (2022) — “Surprised I made it to 30.”
Déjenme Llorar by Carla Morrison — This is my Spanish version of It’s My Party by Lesley Gore.
Ribs by Lorde — Another song I’ve listened to each year around my birthday. The part that always gets me and why I listen to it each year are, “This dream isn't feeling sweet / We're reeling through the midnight streets / And I've never felt more alone / It feels so scary getting old.” I was raised Catholic so I am scared of death lmao
Dreams by The Cranberries — This is one of my absolute favorite songs in the entire world and if I could relive the first time I listened to it I would.
Riptide by Vance Joy — This song is supposed to be about finding someone, being in love, and all that jazz but I never did. Instead, this song just reminds me of when I was a dumb kid and thought the world was infinite and everything is possible. I remember my friend and I broke into a house next to our old highschool that was gonna get demolished. We broke all the windows, spray painted all the walls, and just wreaked havoc on this building. I have a scar on my thigh were I cut myself that night on something. The house ended up getting demolished a week later.
I’ll Believe in Anything by Wolf Parade — I have loved this song since 2010. It’s a song that always gives me chills all over. My favorite lines from this song are, “I said nobody knows you / And nobody gives a damn either way / About your blood, your bones, your voice, and your ghost / Because nobody knows you / And nobody gives a damn either way.”
Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs — I saw them live earlier in the year and I loved every second. They were super popular when I was in highschool, but I never went to any concerts growing up and it wasn’t until my adulthood that I started to go. Anyway, I first came across the acoustic version of this song from one of their live sessions. I wish they would upload an acoustic version to spotify because I think it’s so much better.
My Love Mine All Mine by Mitski — As I reflect on the last 10 years of my life. I’ve been in five serious relationships, one that took up 5 years. I don’t regret any of them because they’ve all taught me something. I do wish I woulda figured it out sooner, but whatever it is what it is. In the past 10 years I have also lost and gained new friendships. Every birthday and every new year, I am so happy with all the homies I got. In the grand scheme of life I never feel alone because I have so much love coming in from those foos. And like this Mitski song (what a fucking genius my wife is btw) all the love I got is mine. I am always so full of all love I get. I love fully, unapologetically, and honestly to anyone that’s willing to accept it— 'Cause my love is mine, all mine I love, my, my, mine nothing in the world belongs to me but my love, mine, all mine, all mine.
Here’s the spooky-ooky playlist in case you’re interested in it lol
I always like listening to surf rock/rockabilly songs during halloween season. Some of my favorite songs from that playlist are: Twin Peaks Twist by Messer Chups, The Cult Song by Shannon and the Clams, and Lucifer, My Love by Twin Temple.

Untitled / 10.17.2023
Buenos días!
I had a lot to say for the actual songs this time so I’ll keep this part short. Don't forget to follow the playlist that accompanies this weekly newsletter on Spotify so you have all the songs ready to listen to at your leisure: ari's listening club playlist
I’ve been in such a music schh-lump lately. Meaning all the artists I usually listen to have not been my vibe lately, but here are some songs/artists I have vibed with a lot recently.
Untitled.
Dirty Work by Steely Dan — Hoping she slides back into my texts by wishing me a happy birthday later this month LMAO
Palomino by Dehd — This is my favorite band. Their sound is so interesting. It's like surf rock/punk with some indie. Idk how to describe them, but I recommend listening to all of their albums. This is one of their slower songs. I’ve seen them live once and Emily (one of lead singers) is so niiice she stayed behind to talk to fans at the merch table and signed one of the vinyls I bought.
Don’t Delete The Kisses by Wolf Alice — Imagine being in love and listening to this song?
Kisscam by Turtlenecked — I felt bad that I didn’t write anything for this song so here I am writing some thoughts lol it’s a good song, very bop-y and it reminded me of Skins (UK) for some reason??? Also it gives the vibe of an early Y2K romcom.
Crazy On You by Heart — I can’t believe this is not one of their top ten songs. The sped up progression to the guitar then the drums, it slaps.
Johanna by Suki Waterhouse — I will say I have been vibing with Suki lately, and this is one of my favorites. It feels like desperation and urgency. Did you know Amanda Lepore is in the music video?
Nobody Sees Me Like You by Japanese Breakfast — Can’t claim JBREKKIE as one of my favorite bands if I just recently *actually really* listened to this song and not as some background music. To be fair I’ve been obsessed with Psychopomp for years now, and like how could I not be with such a masterpiece. Especially after reading Crying at HMART!
Thoroughfare by Ethel Cain — I have listened to all of Ethel’s discography. One of my friends asked me if I was doing good because I had posted the song A House In Nebraska on my story a few weeks ago. I said “I’ve never been better, why?” She then said, “because listening to that song is a cry for help.”
New Promises by Low Pony — If Scout (lead singer) said to marry her I would marry her in a heartbeat. On my knees, yes I’ll do the cooking, the cleaning, everything. I’ve had Low Pony on repeat, mainly this song. It is my second most played song for me this month and Low Pony is my third most played artist. Something about the vocals and Scout as a whole tbh.
Multiply by Dora Jar — I like the blast of guitars towards the end, which I think make this song so unique.
Love Her Madly by The Doors — I started listening to The Doors in high school because I had the biggest crush on this girl, who was this classic cool hipster chick. Prior to having 6th period English class with her I had listened to some songs by The Doors, but I was more of a Ramones, The Clash, Misfits, Dead Kennedys person. But then I saw her wearing a Doors band T and I was like you know what I am gonna listen to The Doors entire discography. This is my second favorite song by them — the first one being Light My Fire.
Moves by Suki Waterhouse — Okay yes, Suki gets two songs this week because I also really like this song. This kinda connects to the Love Her Madly song by The Doors because I was too shy to put the moves on my 6th period crush :( maybe I woulda been married by now if I did.
Brutus(Instrumental) by The Buttress — I like this instrumental version better because the sequence of chant-like synths gives this feverish vibe. It oddly reminds me of the film Suspiria (1977). I highly recommend watching this for the spooky szn. Goblin, an Italian rock band, did the film score for Suspiria (1977). The opening scene where Suzy (main character) has just landed at the airport, and we see sliding doors open and close to reveal a stormy rainy night. With every opening slide of the doors, the tinkling music box chimes of the Suspiria theme begins to play. With every close, it stops. It gives this eerie sensation. It’s a really good opening scene to a film and a really good theme song. Check out the opening scene here. I think this song by The Bruttress should’ve been included in the remake of Suspiria (2018) directed by Luca Guadagnino and it woulda given that same vibe that the Dario Argento 1977 gives. That is my rant on Suspiria, which I could talk more about, but I won’t.

Buenos días!
I know I'm sending this a day earlier than normal, but I had the time. This one is quick, short, and hopefully gets you into a new genre of music.
I’ve been getting into jazz lately. I mainly listen to it when I’m doing my silly little tasks and idk I’ve been vibing with it. I think all the songs are great. They are a bit more on a smoother side, all instrumental, and not very fast space. I think that’s why I couldn’t get into it before because it was always fast paced stuff. Anyway, enjoy :)

BUENOS DÍAS!
I hope y’all enjoyed the first playlist I shared just as much as I enjoyed making it. Feel free to send me any feedback on things you liked, didn’t like, or even music recommendations! I am always looking for new music :)
I had a different playlist drafted up — it was a playlist that I had made for someone I recently liked. She never got to hear it and idk if she ever will. It was a good playlist, era como una carta de amor a un amor que nunca fue. Anyway, now that I’m heartbroken (over my crush) I won’t be listening to it on repeat.
That also means I am obsessed with some new songs. So this is what this playlist is a bunch of recent songs I have had on repeat, some new and some old.
“Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear To Tread)” by Bow Wow Wow — Something about the faster pace and Annabella Lwin’s voice that make this my favorite cover of this song.
“Crush” by Ethel Cain — Every now and then I go through different artist discography. Lately, it has been Ethel Cain’s and this is the song I’ve been obsessed with. This song is off her debut EP, "Inbred." The whole song is amazing, but the lines “yeah right he fucking loves me” and “Good men die too, oh, I'd rather be with you” — like I get it.
“Overtime” by Zach Bryan — Continuing with that small town vibe this song is another great one. The guitar riff starts us off with the star spangled banner then it fades and picks up. It almost reminds me of the Front Bottoms right before Zach Bryan starts singing. Then he also sampled a viral clip of a drunk person from the Indy 500. I think that intro works out so well. The rest of the songs from his self-titled album Zach Bryan are worth checking out.
“Honey- Maya Hawke Version” by Samia ft. Maya Hawke — This came up in one of my indie playlists. If you listen to this with earphones in the panning is simply beautiful.
“Clementine” by Elliott Smith — A simple folky song with lots of imagery. A bit of a twist of the popular song, “Oh My Darling Clementine.” Elliott Smith only had six albums in total before his death. Many believe that his girlfriend Jennifer Chiba stabbed him. Very much a Sid Vicious/Nancy Spungen and Kurt Cobain/Courtney Love type of situation.
“Strawberry” by Sabrina Song — Sabrina Songs charisma and charm show through this song. Her voice, the beat of the song, and the lyrics make this such a soft delicate song. She said she wrote this during a flight visiting Northern California and that it always felt like an August song.
“Atta Girl” by Heavenly — A song by a British twee pop band. This song was released in 1994. I love the album cover art and also the fast pace of lyrics. But the overall vibe is telling someone to fuck off, but also wanting them to come back. I get it.
“Spit Up” by lilo — A bit more slow, but at 3:11 when you have that guitar solo with minimal lyrics, perfection.
“I Deserve A Little Bit More” by The Grooms — From Norfolk, Virginia The Grooms only ever recorded this single in the mid 1970s, which had two sides. This is Track B, which is described as “a devastating beat-ballad,” “raw soul at its best,” and with all its “unhinged emotion” it is definitely worth a listen.
“Silver Line” by Sheer Mag —an American rock band from Philadelphia. Christina Halladay’s vocals I think is what made me play this song on repeat. Almost reminds me of Debbie Harry’s voice and Madonna’s earlier 80s songs and voice.
“Jesse” by Geese — This has a very country-rock feel and around 1:08 with the breathy vocals. Then around 1:25 you get that rock feel. This builds up to 2:07 where we start seeing more of a rock-soul type of vibe. Many online commentators are saying Geese is giving us rock-revival. Definitely a band worth keeping your eye out for if you wanna see them live some time soon with cheaper concert tickets prices.
“When You’re Gone I’ll Be Gone” by Orions Belte ft. Louien — If you like a slow-burn then you’ll like this post-rock track. The song is described as bittersweet nostalgia for a relationship that is no longer there. Another song with yet another beautiful silky guitar solo around 2:53. This song is full of dreamy and ethereal tones.
“Bright Green Vibrant Gray” by Helena Deland — Wispy and folky. This is one of those easy flowing songs that you wanna listen to at the start of your day that makes you grateful to be alive, y’know?
“Boy Scout” by JAWNY — Think of the song “Dirty Work” by Steely Dan, but make it a feel good indie pop track. Steely Dan: “I’m a fool to do your dirty work” and now you have JAWNY with, “I’m a boy scout for your love / Walk me off leash / baby, I’m your dog.” This song is you surrendering to your crush.
WEEK 1: SEP. 4-11
First newsletter
Once again, thank you to all of you who have signed up to support my silly little interest. This is the very first newsletter, which means this is also the first playlist of Ari’s Listening Club!
I recently watched La Vida Inmoral de la Pareja Ideal (2017). If you wanna see my review on this film and others follow me on letterboxd (@deadvibes).
Since watching the film I now have the biggest want to live and have a romance in San Miguel de Allende and say que somos caballitos del mar. Then meeting again in San Miguel de Allende after 20 years, lying to each other that we already made our lives with someone else (we haven’t), y dándonos cuenta de que después de todo no podemos vivir el uno sin el otro.
This playlist encompasses the feeling that has been lingering in me after having watched this film days ago. This playlist is best played in order as it starts more upbeat and transitions into more soft beats.
Caballitos del Mar (best played in order)
“Late Morning Brekkie” by No Vacation — Released on April 6, 2015 from their album Amo XO. They start their dream pop album with this soft instrumental song. It reminds me of summer/spring with the track’s gentle tones. The track’s gentle tone bring images of sunlight coming through the window blinds on a peaceful morning. With the absence of lyrics it creates a cocoon of sonic comfort.
“Estrechez de corazón” by Los Prisioneros — Released in 1986, it carries those 80s new wave and rock influences. This was featured in the soundtrack of La Vida Inmoral de la Pareja Ideal (2017).
“Pictures of You” by The Cure — Released in 1989, this song continues with the feeling of nostalgia and longing for someone and the bittersweet nature of time passing us by.
“Unknown / Nth” by Hozier — Currently my absolute favorite song in Hozier’s newest album Unreal Unearth. Sticking with the nature of love and time passing us by. The line that absolutely kills me is, “Do you know, I could break beneath the weight / of the goodness, love, I still carry for you.” This track slows us down a bit with Hozier’s angelic voice and soothing guitar strums.
“En algún lugar” by Duncan Dhu — Coming back to the 80s this song was released in 1987. Keeping with the new wave/rock influences and longing this song has me thinking of longing and belonging. This song was also featured in the soundtrack of La Vida Inmoral de la Pareja Ideal (2017).
“En Tu Orilla” by Julieta Venegas — Venegas was inspired to write this song from a line in this poem Guárdame en ti by Raúl Zurita). It follows the energetic themes of the past song, while also leaving the listener with poetic tenderness and the essence of intimate connections.
“Accidente” by Las Ligas Menores — This is one of the more recent bands I have found this year. I love their music. This song was released in 2014 with the album, Fuego Artificial. This songs title evokes a feeling of randomness and coincidental occurrence. Chance encounters. The rhythm adds excitement and chaos that often accompany serendipitous moments. This song seems very fitting for that feeling that is first felt with the opening scene of La Vida Inmoral de la Pareja Ideal (2017).
“Vanilla” by Sunset Rollercoaster — This song continues with the passage of time. When ever I listen to this song it always unravels like a silk ribbon with its musical layers and emotions. It is worth noting to fully listen to the band's album "Cassa Nova," released in 2018. The song Burgundy Red from their 2016 EP, “Jinji Kikko” is also worth checking out.
“Full Moon in Gemini” by Vagabon — This is the first song of Vagabon debut album Vagabon. It is one of my favorite albums to listen to in its entirety and suggest you do the same when you get the chance. The song takes us through the ever-changing nature of emotions. Vagabon gives us ethereal synth textures that pair well with the vocals that add a layer of vulnerability.
“Heaven” by Mitski — There's an indescribable quality to this song that envelops me in a cocoon of affection. Maybe it’s the line where she says “As I sip on the rest of the coffee you left / A kiss left of you” followed by the soft gentle chorus, “heaven heaven heaven.” Maybe I am biased, but maybe this is one of the most romantic songs Mitski has written.
“Harvest Moon” by The Brothers Camatose, AJ Lee — A classic by Neil Young, although I had to put this version in here because Neil Young doesn’t have his songs on Spotify. The song its self is a nostalgic ballad that leaves the listener with feelings of love, nostalgia, and once again the passage of time. The chorus, with its repetition of "Because I'm still in love with you / I want to see you dance again," conveys a sense of affection and a longing for reconnection. As August came to an end and autumn season is right around the corner, I felt that that this song was a fitting ending song.
